Downtown feels like a character in itself. It isn’t unusual to see a family drive by in their Moke on the way to the park, or a group of friends laughing as they round the bend in a golf cart on the way to their favorite brunch spot. Because it’s such a walkable city, you can feel familiar with it in just a day or two. There are little hidden surprises around every corner (The American Gardens is a stumble-upon treat).
WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER
The streets. People are out. Bars along the waterfront fill quickly, and the city feels alive as everyone makes their way to dinner.
Your guests will instantly feel like this is a place they've always know.
Stay — The Nickel Hotel or The Charleston Place. You can’t beat the location or the service. Before you even reach the front desk, you’ve likely spoken with multiple team members who’ve taken your bags, greeted you by name, and offered suggestions on where to begin.
Breakfast — Sweetwater Café, just across the street. Order the fried chicken with biscuits and gravy. It may be the best thing you eat while you’re there.
Market Walk — Wander through the market directly by the hotel. Pick up a sweet treat inside, then continue on toward the waterfront.
Waterfront — Take the full walk. Let it stretch a little longer than planned.
Antique Shops — On your way back, stop into a few along the side streets, especially The Charleston Antique Mall. It’s easy to lose track of time here.
Drinks — Basic Kitchen. Order the beet drink and settle in.
Dinner — FIG or the Daniel Humm pop-up, depending on what season you find yourself in.
This is what Charleston looks like when the couple leans into it.
Not overbuilt. Not overfilled.
Just letting the place do what it already does best.
I’ve traveled here with my own family, and that’s when Charleston shifted for me.
It isn’t just elegant. It’s easy.
The aquarium, the fountains kids run straight into, the aircraft carrier, the forts, long afternoons wandering under the trees — it makes it simple to turn a wedding into something more than one day.
Guests can bring their families and actually enjoy it. Not just attend it.
With the college nearby, there are also vetted and available sitters for out-of-town groups, which makes the balance even easier.
Charleston works when you let it stretch.
